About

Often called the Temple of Italian Glories, Santa Croce is the burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini, with a memorial to Dante. Giotto's frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels are milestones of Western painting, and Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel in the cloister is a small masterpiece of proportion.

Best time to go: Mid-afternoon on a weekday; the square outside is lively in the evening.
