About
Dar al-Makhzen has been a royal seat since the Marinids founded Fes Jdid in the thirteenth century, and its grounds cover a vast area of the city. The palace itself is closed to the public, but its main façade, with seven great brass doors framed by zellige and carved cedar, is one of the most photographed sights in Morocco.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning, when the sun falls fully on the gilded doors and the square is at its calmest.
