This succession of streets follows a ridge of rock from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Tall tenements, hidden closes and courtyards line the route, along with St Giles' Cathedral, old merchants' houses and small museums, and in August it fills with Festival Fringe performers.
Best time to go: Walk downhill from the castle and duck into the narrow closes that open off the street.
