About
The palace grew from the guest house of Holyrood Abbey and was rebuilt in its present form for Charles II. Visitors see the State Apartments and the rooms of Mary, Queen of Scots, where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered, and the roofless abbey ruins beside the gardens.
Best time to go: Combine it with a walk up Arthur's Seat, which rises just behind the palace.
