Castle Rock has been fortified since at least the Iron Age, and the castle played a part in centuries of conflict between Scotland and England. Inside you can see the Honours of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the tiny St Margaret's Chapel and the great medieval siege gun Mons Meg.
Best time to go: Book ahead and arrive early, then time your visit to hear the One O'Clock Gun.
