About
Founded in 1290 and settled permanently in Coimbra in 1537 in a former royal palace, the university still dominates the city. Around the Paço das Escolas courtyard, visitors can see the ceremonial Great Hall, the Baroque chapel and the clock tower, whose bell once marked the rhythm of student life.
Best time to go: Buy a combined ticket and book a slot for the library before touring the palace.
