About
Founded in 1131, the monastery was a centre of learning in medieval Portugal. Its church contains the richly carved tombs of Afonso Henriques and Sancho I, while blue-and-white azulejo panels line the nave and a Manueline cloister lies beyond.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning, then have coffee at the famous cafe built into the monastery wall.
