About
The Sé Velha was begun after Coimbra became the capital of the young kingdom of Portugal, and its crenellated walls reflect the unsettled times of the Reconquista. Inside, the ornate Gothic altarpiece and Renaissance chapels contrast with the austere stone nave.
Best time to go: Visit the peaceful cloister, which is often overlooked by visitors in a hurry.
