About
Founded in the fourteenth century by Queen Isabel, later revered as a saint, the convent suffered from repeated flooding until the nuns abandoned it in the seventeenth century. Excavations have revealed the church and cloister, and a museum displays objects recovered from the mud.
Best time to go: Start with the visitor centre, which explains the monastery's long struggle with the river.
