About
For centuries the Markt was the commercial centre of one of Europe's richest trading cities. Colourful step-gabled houses line its northern side, the neo-Gothic Provincial Court fills the east, and a statue in the middle honours Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, leaders of the Flemish uprising of 1302.
Best time to go: Come early in the morning to see the square before the tour groups and horse carriages arrive.
