About

Rising above the Markt, the belfry was begun in the thirteenth century and once held the city's treasury and charters. Some 366 steep steps lead past the treasury room and the clockwork of the carillon to a lookout over the canals, spires and red roofs of the old town. It is part of a UNESCO listing of Belgian and French belfries.

Best time to go: Climb early to avoid a queue, and time your ascent so you are near the top when the carillon plays.
