About
In the Middle Ages this was the busy harbour of Bruges, where goods arrived by canal and foreign traders kept their lodges. The square keeps the elegant Poortersloge, a meeting house of wealthy citizens, and the old Toll House, and a statue of Jan van Eyck stands at its centre. The Spiegelrei and Langerei canals lead off towards quieter streets.
Best time to go: Walk here in the early evening along the Spiegelrei canal, when the old merchant district is at its quietest.
