About
Founded in the thirteenth century for beguines, religious laywomen who lived in community without taking vows, the beguinage is still a place of calm. Today Benedictine sisters and other residents live in the white houses, and one small house is open to show how the beguines once lived. It is part of the UNESCO listing of Flemish beguinages.
Best time to go: Visit in spring, when daffodils cover the lawn, and keep voices low in this quiet enclosure.
