About

Rediscovered in 2001 during a survey of the square, the ossuary holds the bones of tens of thousands of people, many of them victims of plague, cholera and the Thirty Years' War. Carefully arranged skulls and bones fill the vaults, and the site is sombre and quietly moving rather than macabre.

Best time to go: Book a timed entry ahead, as the vaults below the church admit only small groups.
