About
Work on the temple began in the sixth century BC but was only completed under the emperor Hadrian some six centuries later. Of its original 104 Corinthian columns, fifteen still stand and a sixteenth lies where a storm toppled it in the nineteenth century, giving a vivid sense of the building's colossal scale.
Best time to go: Pair it with Hadrian's Arch next door and look back towards the Acropolis for the classic photograph.
