The walls of the citadel date back to Roman and Byzantine times, with later Seljuk and Ottoman additions. Within them lies a quarter of old houses, craft shops and cafes, while the ramparts offer a sweeping view over modern Ankara.
Best time to go: Walk up through the old lanes in the late afternoon for the view at sunset.
