About
Built to house the relics of St Mark, brought from Alexandria in 828, the basilica blends Byzantine and Western styles. Inside, the gold mosaics seem to glow; the museum upstairs holds the original bronze horses and a terrace over the square.
Best time to go: First entry of the morning; book a timed slot and cover shoulders and knees.
