About
Gastown grew around a saloon opened in 1867 by the talkative riverboat captain John Deighton, known as Gassy Jack. After decline in the twentieth century, the area was revived as a historic district. The cobbled streets now hold boutiques, restaurants and bars, and the steam-powered clock on Water Street is a local landmark.
Best time to go: Watch the steam clock whistle on the hour, then stay for dinner in one of the area's restaurants.
