About
The Navoi Theatre is Uzbekistan's national opera house, named after the poet Alisher Navoi. It was designed by Alexey Shchusev and built between 1942 and 1947, partly by Japanese prisoners of war forced to work on it. It opened in November 1947 to mark the 500th anniversary of Navoi's birth. The auditorium seats 1,400 people, and the theatre was granted Bolshoi status in 1966.
Best time to go: Book a ballet or opera evening if you can; otherwise see the facade lit up at night.
