About
A Ming official, Pan Yunduan, began the garden in 1559 as a retreat for his parents. Its pavilions, ponds, rockeries and dragon-topped walls create a sequence of carefully framed views, and outside it the zigzag bridge to the Huxinting Teahouse and the busy Yuyuan bazaar complete the scene.
Best time to go: Arrive at opening to see the rockeries and pools before the crowds, then explore the bazaar around it.
