About

From 1849 until the 1940s this area was governed by France, and its tree-lined streets filled with European-style houses, churches and apartment blocks. Today it is one of the city's most pleasant places to wander, with parks, cafés, restaurants and small museums in its historic lanes.

Best time to go: Explore on foot or by bicycle on a leafy morning, along roads such as Wukang Road.
