About
Opened in 1909 when Rio was Brazil's capital, the theatre was modelled on Charles Garnier's opera house in Paris and richly decorated with marble, onyx, bronze and stained glass. It remains the home of the city's opera, ballet and symphony, and stands on Cinelândia square among other monuments of the era.
Best time to go: Take a guided tour by day, or better, book a ballet or opera to see the auditorium at its most glamorous.
