About
Dar al-Makhzen stands within a large walled precinct known as the Mechouar, which also holds a mosque, government offices and the royal guard. The palace itself is closed to visitors, but the approach across the open grounds to its green-tiled roofs and grand gateway gives a sense of the ceremonial heart of the Moroccan state.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning and keep your passport handy, as guards may check identity at the entrance to the grounds.
