About
Laid out soon after the city's founding in 1531, the square was once a marketplace and the scene of bullfights and public ceremonies. Today it is the calm centre of a historic core listed by UNESCO, with a fountain to the Archangel Michael, the city's patron, at its heart and long arcades of cafés along three sides.
Best time to go: Take a seat under the arcades in the early evening, when the cathedral is floodlit and the square fills with families.
