About
Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza gave his personal collection of several thousand books on the condition that anyone who wished to read might use them. The long vaulted hall, lined with tiers of carved wooden shelves, was added in the eighteenth century and now holds tens of thousands of rare volumes, recognised by UNESCO's Memory of the World programme.
Best time to go: Visit early in the day, when the reading hall is quiet and the light falls across the carved shelves.
