About
Construction began in the 1570s and was completed in the early nineteenth century, so the building blends Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Inside, the gilded Altar of the Kings is the showpiece, and a long engineering effort has been needed to stop the heavy structure sinking unevenly into the soft ground.
Best time to go: Visit mid-morning and notice how the floors and altars lean as the building settles into the old lakebed.
