About
Kuching's Chinatown runs behind the river, and its best-known streets are Main Bazaar and Carpenter Street. Main Bazaar was the city's first street, laid out along the Sarawak River with wharves and jetties close by for loading goods. The Hong San Si Temple stands at its eastern end and the Old Court House at its western end. Chinese settlers arrived in larger numbers after James Brooke took control of Sarawak.
Best time to go: Walk Main Bazaar and Carpenter Street in the morning, when the shops open and the streets are cooler.
