About
The Astana stands on the north bank of the Sarawak River, facing the Kuching Waterfront. It was built in 1870 by Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah, as a wedding gift to his wife Margaret. Today it is the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak. The palace itself is not normally open to visitors, but its landscaped gardens are, and it forms part of the Kuching Heritage Trail.
Best time to go: View it from the waterfront at sunset; only the gardens are normally open, reached by boat across the river.
