About
Konya Ark is the citadel on the western side of Itchan Kala and covers about 1.2 hectares. It was built in the 17th century by Muhammad Erenke Khan as the administrative centre of the Khanate of Khiva. Within a century it held the khan's mosque, residence, court, reception hall, arsenal, mint, harem and stables. Its tiled reception hall, the Kurnysh Khan, was rebuilt in 1804 to 1806 with a courtyard for a summer yurt.
Best time to go: Visit in the late afternoon, starting in the tiled reception hall before the tour groups arrive.
