About
Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of Khiva and has been a World Heritage Site since 1990, the first in Central Asia. It holds more than 50 historic monuments and 250 old houses, most of them from the 18th and 19th centuries. The highlights include the Konya Ark, the Juma Mosque, several madrasahs and the mausoleum of Pahlavon Mahmud, all within a short walk of each other.
Best time to go: Walk the walls at sunset, then return to the lanes after dark when the tour groups have gone.
