About
Muhammad ibn Khairun, a private patron, commissioned this small mosque in 866 during the Aghlabid era. Its carved facade, pierced by three arched doorways, is one of the earliest examples of a richly decorated exterior in Islamic architecture. The minaret was added much later, in 1440, under the Hafsids. The facade is the part to see, and it can be admired from the lane outside.
Best time to go: Find it in the medina lanes in the morning, when the light picks out the carving on the facade.
