About
The Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi established the mosque in 670, when he founded Kairouan itself. It covers more than 9,000 square metres, making it one of the largest Islamic monuments in North Africa, and it became the model for later mosques across the Maghreb. Within its perimeter of about 405 metres lie a hypostyle prayer hall, a marble-paved courtyard and a square minaret.
Best time to go: Come in the morning, dress modestly, and see the courtyard and minaret outside prayer times.
