About
Kairouan had a Jewish community from its founding and was home to one of North Africa's first great Talmudic academies. The community left after the Almohad expulsion in the twelfth century and returned in numbers only under the French protectorate. In 1920 it opened this synagogue on Salah-Souissi Street, which served the community until the 1970s. It is a quiet reminder of a long and layered history.
Best time to go: It no longer serves as a synagogue, so treat it as a brief stop seen from the street.
