About
In 1842 a small British garrison here was besieged by Boer forces. The young trader Dick King slipped away and rode some six hundred miles to Grahamstown to raise help, and relief arrived by sea weeks later. Today the fort is a small, peaceful site with a garden, a chapel and memorials, a reminder of the city's colonial beginnings.
Best time to go: Stop by on a walk through the city centre and read the story of Dick King's famous ride.
