About
Held in turn by the Rožmberk, Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg families, the castle grew from a thirteenth-century fortress into a vast residence of courtyards and painted facades. Its treasures include a rare Baroque theatre with its original stage machinery, the lofty Cloak Bridge and terraced gardens with a revolving open-air auditorium.
Best time to go: Climb the painted tower first thing, then book the Baroque theatre tour for later in the day.
