About
Founded in 1191 by the Zähringen dynasty on a narrow peninsula, the old town was rebuilt in sandstone after a great fire in 1405. Some six kilometres of covered arcades line its streets, and around a dozen Renaissance fountains with painted figures punctuate Kramgasse, Marktgasse and Gerechtigkeitsgasse.
Best time to go: Walk the arcades on a rainy day, and look out for the painted fountains along the main streets.
