About
Elephantine was a frontier town and trading post for thousands of years, guarding Egypt's southern border. The ruins of Abu at its southern tip include the temple of the ram god Khnum and a Nilometer used to measure the river's flood. The rest of the island is home to Nubian villages with brightly painted houses and palm-shaded lanes.
Best time to go: Take the local ferry across in the late afternoon and wander through the colourful Nubian villages.
