About

The governors and officials of Elephantine were buried in tombs cut into this hill during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Several are decorated with lively painted scenes, and some carry inscriptions describing expeditions deep into Africa. At the summit, a small domed shrine gives the hill its name, and the panorama over the Nile, islands and town is unforgettable.

Best time to go: Cross by boat late in the afternoon and climb to the domed shrine at the top for sunset.
