Had it been completed, this obelisk would have been the largest ever raised in ancient Egypt, far taller and heavier than any that stands today. Workers abandoned it when a crack appeared, leaving it still attached to the bedrock. It offers a rare insight into how the ancient Egyptians quarried their monuments, with tool marks still visible in the stone.
Best time to go: Go early in the day, as the open granite quarry offers little shade.
