نبذة

The knights strengthened the walls continually through the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, adapting them to gunpowder with thick bastions and a deep dry moat. They held off the siege of 1480 before falling to Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522, and gates such as the d'Amboise and Marine gates remain memorable entrances to the old town.
