About
Funded by the industrialist Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1913, the palace was built to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration. It is now also the seat of the International Court of Justice, and nations donated materials and furnishings, from Italian marble to Japanese wall hangings.
Best time to go: Start at the visitor centre by the gates; tours of the interior are occasional and must be booked.
