About
Founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand and Pietro Maria Bardi, the museum moved in 1968 into Lina Bo Bardi's striking building, which suspends its galleries above an open public plaza. The collection spans Raphael, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Renoir alongside major Brazilian artists, famously displayed on transparent easels.
Best time to go: Allow time for the main gallery, where paintings hang on glass easels, and look out for the free day each week.
