About
Founded by St Rupert around 696, the Benedictine abbey has been in continuous use ever since. Its church is Romanesque in origin with a Rococo interior, and the atmospheric cemetery below the Mönchsberg leads to early Christian catacombs cut into the rock face.
Best time to go: Wander the cemetery arcades in the quiet of early morning, then visit the catacombs in the cliff.
