About
Built over the traditional tomb of St Peter between 1506 and 1626, the basilica involved Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini. Entry is free; the climb to the top of the dome has a separate ticket and a spectacular view over St Peter's Square.
Best time to go: At opening, around 7 am, or late afternoon; dress codes apply (covered shoulders and knees).
