About
Built as Emperor Hadrian's tomb in the second century, the castle later became a refuge for popes, linked to the Vatican by an elevated corridor. Inside are papal apartments and a museum; the terrace is the reward.
Best time to go: Late afternoon, for sunset over St Peter's from the rooftop terrace.
