About
Laid out by Charles IV in 1348 as a horse market, the square is now lined with hotels, shops and Art Nouveau facades. Crowds gathered here in 1918, 1968 and during the Velvet Revolution of 1989, and a memorial near the statue of St Wenceslas recalls the students Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc.
Best time to go: Walk up from the lower end towards the equestrian statue and the National Museum at the top.
