About
Built to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911 and completed in 1924, the arch blends Gothic and Indo-Saracenic forms in yellow basalt. The last British troops left India through it in 1948, and today it faces the grand Taj Mahal Palace hotel and serves as the departure point for boats to Elephanta Island.
Best time to go: Come early in the morning before the crowds, or at sunset when the harbour turns gold.
