About
Founded as Ville-Marie in 1642, Montreal grew from this riverside settlement into a great trading city. The old town has kept buildings from the French and British eras, from seminary and chapel to grand bank headquarters. Place Jacques-Cartier, the Bonsecours Market and the waterfront promenade of the Old Port are highlights.
Best time to go: Walk the cobbled streets early in the day, then head down to the Old Port by the river.
