About
The earthquake of 1861 destroyed colonial Mendoza, including its cathedral, and the city was rebuilt on a new grid with wide streets and spacious plazas. The present cathedral began as a chapel and was designated as an interim cathedral in 1934, a quiet counterpoint to the lively streets around it.
Best time to go: Look in while exploring the streets around Plaza Independencia and the shopping lanes of the centre.
