About
Opened in the 1970s, the museum shows a carefully chosen collection rather than a vast one, which makes each piece easier to appreciate. Highlights include superb statues found buried in a cache beneath Luxor Temple, objects from Tutankhamun's tomb and a reconstructed wall of blocks from a temple of Akhenaten. A newer wing covers Thebes at the height of its military power.
Best time to go: Visit in the evening after a day on the west bank, when the galleries are cool and uncrowded.
